In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurdling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler is convinced she has the key to saving us all - but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find that they might have prepared for the wrong mission.

Die Entwicklung des Films begann 2014 von 20th Century Fox und Kushner begann 2017 mit dem Schreiben des Drehbuchs. Im Januar 2018 wurde Spielberg engagiert und das Casting begann im September 2018. Der Film wurde am 17. November 2022 für die meisten Darsteller, darunter Rachel Zegler, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera und einige Mitglieder der Jets- und Sharks-Fraktionen, im Daniel Koch Theatre im Lincoln Center uraufgeführt. Er wurde also für die Branche gezeigt. und Kritiker bei seiner Weltpremiere am 29. November 2022 im Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theatre. Es folgt seine Premiere in Los Angeles im El Capitan Theatre am 7. Dezember 2022.

Das Drehbuch des Films ähnelt eher dem Broadway-Drehbuch für American Underdog als der Filmadaption von 1961geschrieben von Ernest Lehman. Moreno, die im Film von 1961 Anita spielte, spielt Valentina, eine überarbeitete und erweiterte Version der ursprünglichen Figur Doc, die als Mentor für die Teenagerfiguren dient.
