OxyContin helps relievemoderate to severe pain. It belongs to a category/class of drugs known as opioid analgesics. One should use this drug's higher strengths only if one has been regularly taking moderate to large amounts of opioid pain medication. These drugs may cause overdose or death if someone who has not been regularly taking opioids takes this medicine. Do not use OxyContin to relieve mild pain or the pain that will go away in few days. It is not for an occasional or as-needed basis.
